We’d seen a hundred photos of the Nine Arch Bridge before we got there, and it still stopped us in our tracks. The old stone viaduct curves across a jungle-filled ravine surrounded by tea, and when the blue train finally rumbled across, everyone on the hillside cheered. It’s touristy, sure, but it’s genuinely special.
Here’s our practical guide to visiting the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, including how to get there, train timing and the best photo spots. For more ideas, see our things to do in Ella.

About the Nine Arch Bridge
Also called the Bridge in the Sky, the viaduct sits at Demodara between Ella and Demodara stations. It was built during the British colonial era in the early 20th century, and is famous for being constructed from stone, brick and cement without steel. It’s around 90 metres long and about 24 metres high.
How to get there
- Walk along the railway line from Ella station, about 45 minutes. It’s popular, but be very careful of trains.
- Walk the jungle path from near the Ella–Passara road. It’s shorter and leads down to the viewpoint cafés.
- Take a tuk-tuk to the top car park, then walk down for 10 to 15 minutes.
When does the train cross?
Several trains cross daily in each direction. Timetables change and delays are common, so ask your guesthouse or the café owners near the bridge, who usually know when the next train is due. Arrive at least 20 minutes early.
Our tip: go early in the morning for soft light and fewer people. By mid-morning, the bridge can be crowded with tour groups.
Best photo spots
- The hillside viewpoint above the bridge for the classic shot of the train crossing.
- The café terraces on the opposite slope, with a drink in hand.
- Track level at either end for leading lines (step well clear when trains come).
Safety tips
- Never stand on the bridge when a train is due. There’s very little room.
- Watch your footing on the tracks and steep paths.
- Keep children close at all times.
- Wear shoes with grip; paths are muddy after rain.
Combine your visit
Pair the bridge with Little Adam’s Peak in the same morning, as the trails are close. Then head back to town for lunch. If you’ve got another morning, tackle the Ella Rock hike.
