Sri Lanka 7-Day Itinerary: Two Perfect One-Week Routes

A week in Sri Lanka sounds short, and it is. But flights from Australia are reasonable, the time difference is small (just 4.5 to 5.5 hours behind the east coast), and the island is compact. With smart planning, seven days is plenty for a fantastic taste of the country.

Here’s our 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary for Australians, focused on two regions so you spend more time exploring and less time in the car.

Option 1: Culture and hill country

  • Day 1: Arrive and drive to Sigiriya (overnight).
  • Day 2: Climb Sigiriya early, then Dambulla Cave Temple.
  • Day 3: Pidurangala sunrise, drive to Kandy.
  • Day 4: Kandy: lake, temple and gardens.
  • Day 5: Train to Ella.
  • Day 6: Ella: hikes and Nine Arch Bridge.
  • Day 7: Drive back to Colombo airport (about 5 to 6 hours).

Option 2: South coast and safari

  • Day 1: Arrive and drive to Galle.
  • Day 2: Galle Fort walking tour and lighthouse sunset.
  • Day 3: Unawatuna beach day.
  • Day 4: Mirissa, with whale watching in season.
  • Day 5: Drive to Yala for an afternoon safari.
  • Day 6: Dawn safari, then drive back along the coast.
  • Day 7: Fly home from Colombo.

Our tip: choose Option 1 if you love culture and scenery, and Option 2 if you want beaches and wildlife. Trying to do both in one week means far too much driving.

Best time to go

Both options work best from December to April. From May to September, consider a Cultural Triangle plus Pasikuda combination instead. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka’s east coast.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Sri Lanka?

A week is enough for a great introduction if you focus on one or two regions.

Which region should I choose for one week?

For first-timers, the Cultural Triangle and hill country offer the most variety. Beach lovers should focus on the south coast.

Do I need a driver for a 7-day trip?

It’s highly recommended. A private driver saves time and stress on Sri Lanka’s busy roads.
