We set off up Ella Rock in the dark with head torches, a local dog trotting beside us as an unofficial guide. Two sweaty hours later we were sitting on the summit with a thermos of tea, watching the sun light up the whole of Ella Gap. It’s the best hike we did in Sri Lanka.
Here’s everything Australians need to know about hiking Ella Rock: route options, how long it takes, what to bring and how to stay safe. For other ideas, see our list of things to do in Ella.

Route options
Via the railway line and Kital Ella
The most popular route follows the railway tracks from Ella station towards Kital Ella, then crosses a small bridge and climbs through tea plantations and eucalyptus forest. The turn-off can be confusing, so use an offline map app.
From the Ella–Passara side
Some walkers start from the other side of the valley via villages and tea estates. It can be quieter but is less straightforward; a local guide is a good idea.
Should you hire a guide?
You don’t need one if you’re an experienced walker with an offline map, but guides are inexpensive and take the stress out of route-finding. Be wary of people who “help” for free and then ask for money at a fake viewpoint or tea shack.
What to bring
- At least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person.
- Hiking shoes with good grip; the trail gets slippery after rain.
- Head torch if you’re starting before sunrise.
- Rain jacket and a warm layer for the top.
- Snacks, sunscreen, hat and insect repellent.
- Small cash for drinks at the summit stall.
Our tip: check the forecast and look at the sky. If cloud is sitting on the mountain, the summit view may be completely blanked out. Try again the next morning if you can.
Safety tips
- Walking on the railway line is common but always step well clear when trains approach.
- Leeches appear after rain; long socks and repellent help.
- Tell your guesthouse your plans and expected return time.
- Turn back if the weather turns or the trail becomes unsafe.
Ella Rock vs Little Adam’s Peak
Little Adam’s Peak is much easier, about 45 minutes each way, and great for families. Ella Rock is longer and harder but gives you a bigger, wilder view. If you have time, do both on separate mornings.
