Where to Stay in Mirissa: Best Beach Areas for Australians

Mirissa is the beach town that convinced us we could happily live in Sri Lanka. A curved bay of golden sand fringed with palms, sunsets that turn everything pink, and a 6am whale-watching boat that delivered blue whales within an hour. Choosing where to stay was the only tricky bit.

Here’s our guide to where to stay in Mirissa for Australian travellers, from beachfront bungalows to clifftop villas. For more south-coast ideas, see our Galle travel guide.

Best areas to stay in Mirissa

Mirissa Beach

Stay right on the main beach for sunset views, cafés and nightlife on your doorstep. It’s lively in peak season, so choose a property at either end for more peace.

Coconut Tree Hill and the headland

The famous palm-covered hill offers some of the best views. Boutique villas nearby are quieter and very photogenic.

Hillside and inland

Villas and guesthouses on the hills behind the beach offer jungle views, pools and better value, a short tuk-tuk ride from the sand.

Nearby Weligama and Talalla

Weligama has gentle surf for beginners, while Talalla is a quiet, beautiful bay. Both are 15 to 30 minutes away.

Our tip: Mirissa’s swimming conditions vary by season. From December to April the bay is calmer; outside these months, waves can be powerful. Always check with your hotel.
