Best areas to stay in Negombo

Negombo beach strip (Porutota Road)

The main tourist area, lined with beach hotels, restaurants and bars. It’s the most convenient choice for first-time visitors.

Near the lagoon

Quieter stays overlooking Negombo Lagoon, with sunset views and boat trips through the mangroves.

Close to the airport

A handful of hotels sit just minutes from the terminal. Practical for very late arrivals or early flights, but less atmospheric.

Our tip: ask your hotel to arrange an airport pick-up. After a 10-hour flight, it’s worth every rupee to see someone holding a sign with your name on it.

Things to do in Negombo

  • Take a boat trip on the lagoon and the old Dutch canal.
  • See St Mary’s Church and other colonial-era churches.
  • Relax on the beach with a cold king coconut.
  • Eat fresh crab, prawns and lagoon fish.

Negombo vs Colombo for your first night

Negombo is closer to the airport and more relaxed, with a beach. Colombo has more culture and dining but traffic can be heavy. For most Aussies, Negombo is the easier first stop.
