If Sigiriya is the star, Pidurangala is the best seat in the house. We scrambled up in the dark with head torches, squeezed through a gap between boulders near the top, and emerged onto a flat rock just as the sun rose behind Lion Rock. It was the single most memorable sunrise of our trip.
Here’s our guide to hiking Pidurangala Rock for Australian travellers, including the route, timing, what to wear and how it compares with Sigiriya. For more ideas, see our Sigiriya travel guide.

Pidurangala at a glance
- Location: about 1 to 2 km north of Sigiriya.
- Climb time: around 30 to 45 minutes up.
- Difficulty: moderate, with a short boulder scramble near the top.
- Best for: sunrise, sunset and views of Sigiriya.
- Cost: a small entry fee at the temple, much cheaper than Sigiriya.
The route
The trail starts at the Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple, where you’ll buy your ticket. Because you’re entering a temple area, cover shoulders and knees for the first section (bring a sarong or scarf). Stone steps lead up through forest, past a large reclining Buddha in a cave. The final section involves scrambling over and between boulders, which needs hands and a bit of agility, but no special skills.
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunrise is magic, with Sigiriya silhouetted against the sky and mist over the jungle. Sunset is easier logistically and just as beautiful. Either way, allow time to descend in daylight or carry a torch.
Our tip: wear proper shoes, not thongs. The final scramble is steep, and you’ll want good grip, especially on the way down.
What to bring
- A head torch for sunrise or sunset climbs.
- Water and a small snack.
- A sarong or scarf for the temple section.
- Insect repellent.
- Your camera, obviously!
