Where to Stay in Sigiriya: Best Areas and Hotels for Australians

Sigiriya is the perfect base for exploring Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, and the accommodation here is some of the most memorable on the island. We’ve woken up to a view of Lion Rock from our villa balcony, watched elephants wander past an eco-lodge, and eaten village curry under the stars. Choosing well makes all the difference.

Here’s our guide to where to stay in Sigiriya for Australian travellers, from jungle villas to family resorts. For things to do, see our Sigiriya climbing guide.

Main areas to stay

  • Sigiriya village: walkable to the rock, with guesthouses and boutique villas.
  • Around the lakes and jungle: eco-lodges and treehouses with wildlife on the doorstep.
  • Habarana: a junction town with larger resorts, convenient for safaris.
  • Dambulla: close to the cave temple, with a range of mid-range hotels.

Sigiriya village

Staying in the village means you can be at the gate when it opens, or walk to Pidurangala for sunrise. You’ll find family-run guesthouses, boutique villas and a few small resorts, many with views of the rock.

Jungle and lake retreats

Surrounding Sigiriya are eco-lodges, treehouses and luxury villas set among paddy fields, lakes and forest. Expect birdsong, the odd monkey on the roof and occasionally elephants nearby. Properties like Water Garden Sigiriya and Jetwing Vil Uyana are known for their settings.

Habarana

About 20 to 30 minutes from Sigiriya, Habarana is home to larger resorts with pools and spas. It’s convenient for safaris in Minneriya and Kaudulla and day trips to Polonnaruwa.

Dambulla

Closer to the Dambulla Cave Temple and the main road network, Dambulla offers good-value hotels and is handy if you’re continuing to Kandy.

Our tip: book at least two nights. One day for Sigiriya and Pidurangala, another for Dambulla, Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari. One night always feels rushed.

Booking tips

  • Choose air-conditioned rooms; the Cultural Triangle is hot year-round.
  • Check mosquito nets and screens if you’re staying in eco-lodges.
  • Ask if the hotel can arrange early breakfasts for sunrise climbs.
  • Book ahead from December to April, the busiest season.
