Choosing where to stay in Galle shaped our whole trip more than we expected. The first time, we booked a beach resort 20 minutes out of town and spent half our holiday in tuk-tuks. The second time, we stayed inside the fort walls, walked everywhere, and finally understood why people fall in love with this place.
Here’s our honest guide to the best places to stay in Galle for Australian travellers, whether you’re a couple after a boutique villa, a family who needs a pool, or friends who want the beach on their doorstep. For the wider picture, see our Galle travel guide.

Galle Fort, Unawatuna or the coast? A quick overview
- Inside Galle Fort: best for first-timers, couples and anyone who loves history, cafés and walking.
- Unawatuna: best for beach lovers, swimmers and a relaxed, social vibe.
- Coastal resorts between Galle and Ahangama: best for families, honeymooners and pool-and-sunset holidays.
- Galle hinterland: best for privacy, nature and quiet villa stays.
Staying inside Galle Fort
If it’s your first visit, this is where we’d book. Staying inside the fort means you can walk the ramparts at sunrise, head back for a swim or nap in the heat of the day, then wander out again for dinner without organising transport. Evenings are magic once the day-trippers leave.
Accommodation here ranges from small guesthouses and restored Dutch-era villas to some of Sri Lanka’s best-known heritage hotels, such as Amangalla, the Galle Fort Hotel and Fort Bazaar. Boutique rooms are often small and full of character rather than resort-style, so check photos and reviews carefully.
Pros and cons
- Pros: walkable, atmospheric, great restaurants and shops on your doorstep.
- Cons: fewer big pools, rooms can be compact, and the best places book out early for December to March.
Staying in Unawatuna
About 15 minutes by tuk-tuk from the fort, Unawatuna is the classic beach base. The bay is sheltered, so swimming is usually calm in the drier season, and there’s a good mix of guesthouses, mid-range hotels and beach bars. It’s a great pick if you want beach mornings and fort afternoons.
- Pros: swimmable beach, good value, lively evenings.
- Cons: busier and more built-up than other parts of the coast.
Coastal resorts near Galle
Along the coast either side of Galle you’ll find larger hotels and resorts with big pools, kids’ facilities and beachfront dining. Jetwing Lighthouse, designed by famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, and the Radisson Blu Resort Galle are two names Australians often search for. These suit families and couples who want a resort-style break, with short drives into the fort.
- Pros: pools, space, sea views, easy for families.
- Cons: you’ll need a car or tuk-tuk for most outings.
Hinterland villas
For something quieter, look inland at villas set among rice paddies, cinnamon gardens and jungle. Many come with a private pool and cook, which can be surprisingly good value for a group or extended family. Just factor in the drive to the coast.
Our tip: split your stay. Two nights in the fort and two at the beach gives you the best of both worlds without ever feeling rushed.
Tips for booking accommodation in Galle
- Book early for peak season. December to April is the driest time on the south coast and the most popular with Australians escaping winter… and with Europeans escaping theirs.
- Check air-con and hot water. Most mid-range and above places have both, but confirm with smaller guesthouses.
- Read recent reviews. Look for comments on noise, mosquito nets and how far the walk to the fort or beach really is.
- Ask about transfers. Many hotels can arrange a car from Colombo airport, which is easiest after a long flight from Australia.
- Consider monsoon deals. May to September is quieter and cheaper. Expect showers, but also fewer crowds.
How many nights should you stay in Galle?
We recommend at least two to three nights. That gives you time for the fort, a beach day and a south-coast outing. Our 3-day Galle itinerary shows how to fill them, and our list of things to do in Galle has plenty more ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Galle Fort or Unawatuna?
Stay in the fort for history, food and walkability. Choose Unawatuna if beach time and swimming are your priority. Many travellers do a few nights in each.
What is the best area to stay in Galle for families?
Families usually prefer coastal resorts with pools and space, or a private villa. The fort is great to visit but rooms there can be small.
Are hotels in Galle Fort expensive?
There’s a range. Heritage hotels sit at the top end, but you’ll also find comfortable guesthouses and boutique rooms at mid-range prices.
