Three days in Galle sounds generous until you’re there. Then it feels about right. Long enough to walk the fort without rushing, spend an afternoon at the beach, and still squeeze in a day trip down the coast. This is the itinerary we’d hand to friends flying out from Australia, built around the heat, the light and the best meals.

Use it as a template, not a timetable. If it’s your first trip to Sri Lanka, our Explore Sri Lanka page and Galle travel guide will help you fit Galle into the bigger picture.

Before you go: a few things we’d tell any Aussie

  • Arrive the night before if you can. After an overnight flight from Australia and the two-to-three-hour drive from Colombo airport, day one goes better with a proper sleep.
  • Stay inside or close to the fort. Being able to walk back for an afternoon rest makes a huge difference in the heat.
  • Plan around the sun. Get out early, rest between about 12pm and 3pm, then head out again for the golden hour.

Day 1: Galle Fort, slowly

Morning: ramparts and old town

Start with a walk along the ramparts while it’s still cool. Enter near the main gate, follow the walls past the clock tower and keep going towards the lighthouse. Then cut inland and wander Pedlar Street and Church Street. Our self-guided walking tour has a full route.

Afternoon: museums, shops and a long lunch

Escape the midday heat with a heritage stop, a browse through the fort’s design boutiques and a rice and curry lunch. Then head back to your room for a swim or a nap. No shame in it — the locals are doing the same.

Evening: lighthouse sunset

Be at the lighthouse end of the fort about 30 minutes before sunset. Grab a king coconut, watch the cliff jumpers, then wander to dinner as the lanes light up.

Day 2: Beaches and the south coast

Morning: Unawatuna or Jungle Beach

Take a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna (about 15 minutes) for swimming and snorkelling, or head to Jungle Beach for something quieter. In the drier months the water is calm and clear, a nice change from the surf back home.

Afternoon: coastal sights

Hire a driver for a loop along the coast: stilt fishermen near Koggala, a sea turtle conservation project, or the Japanese Peace Pagoda for views back over the bay. Agree on the price before you set off.

Evening: dinner in the fort

Treat yourself to a nicer dinner tonight. Galle has some excellent restaurants serving modern Sri Lankan and seafood dishes, often in beautifully restored colonial buildings.

Day 3: Choose your own adventure

On your last day, pick the option that suits your crew:

  • Whale watching from Mirissa: best roughly December to April. It’s an early start and the sea can be choppy, so take seasickness tablets if you’re prone.
  • Tea country day trip: visit a tea estate inland from Galle and learn how your cuppa is made.
  • Cricket: if a match is on at Galle International Stadium, grab tickets. Watching a Test there is something a lot of Aussie cricket fans dream about.
  • Slow day: a massage, a final walk around the walls and one more long lunch. Honestly, a pretty good choice.

If you only take one tip from this itinerary: don’t over-schedule. Galle rewards the people who sit on a verandah with a cold drink and watch the world go by.

Getting around Galle

Inside the fort you’ll walk everywhere. For beaches and nearby sights, tuk-tuks are cheap and plentiful (agree on a fare first, or use a ride-hailing app where available). For full-day trips, a private car and driver is comfortable and usually good value compared with Australian prices.

When to go

December to April is generally the best weather on the southwest coast. May to September is monsoon season here, though showers often come in bursts. See this seasonal overview, and if you’re arriving by ship, check the Galle port information.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days in Galle too long?

Not at all. Three days gives you time for the fort, the beach and a day trip without rushing, which matters in the tropical heat.

Where should we stay in Galle?

Inside the fort for atmosphere and walkability, or near Unawatuna if beach time is the priority. We’re happy to recommend options that suit your budget.
