Best Day Trips from Sigiriya: Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Elephant Safaris

Sigiriya sits right in the middle of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, which means some of the island’s greatest treasures are within an hour or two. We based ourselves there for three nights and still didn’t run out of things to see: painted cave temples, ancient royal cities and hundreds of wild elephants gathered at a lake.

Here are the best day trips from Sigiriya for Australian travellers. For tips on the rock itself, see our Sigiriya climbing guide.

1. Dambulla Cave Temple

About 30 minutes from Sigiriya, this UNESCO-listed complex of five caves is filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings dating back more than 2,000 years. It’s a steep walk up, so go early or late. Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats.

2. Polonnaruwa ancient city

Around an hour away, Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s medieval capital. Rent a bicycle and explore palaces, temples and the stunning Gal Vihara, four Buddha figures carved from a single granite rock face. Allow half a day.

3. Minneriya or Kaudulla elephant safari

In the dry season, roughly July to October, hundreds of elephants gather around the reservoirs of Minneriya and Kaudulla in what’s often called “The Gathering”. Afternoon jeep safaris are the best time to see them.

4. Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka’s first ancient capital is a longer day trip, around 2 hours away, but full of huge stupas, sacred bodhi trees and monastery ruins. Hire a driver and guide for context.

5. Ritigala forest monastery

An atmospheric ruined monastery deep in the forest, rarely crowded. Great for history buffs who want something off the beaten track.

6. Village experiences

Many operators offer bullock cart rides, lake canoe trips and a village lunch cooked on a wood fire. It’s touristy but fun, and kids love it.

Our tip: do Sigiriya at 7am, Dambulla in the late afternoon on the same day, then save Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari for day two. You’ll avoid the worst of the heat and crowds.
