Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka’s East Coast: Pasikuda, Trinco and Arugam Bay

One of the best things about Sri Lanka is that it’s almost always beach season somewhere. The island has two monsoons that hit different coasts at different times, so if you plan well you can find sunshine year-round. We learnt this the hard way, arriving in Galle in June to sideways rain, then driving east to Pasikuda and finding blue skies.

Here’s our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka’s east coast, including Pasikuda, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, written for Australian travellers. For more on Pasikuda, see our Pasikuda travel guide.

Sri Lanka’s two monsoons explained

  • Southwest monsoon (roughly May to September): brings rain to the west and south coasts, including Colombo, Galle and Mirissa. The east coast stays mostly dry.
  • Northeast monsoon (roughly November to February): brings rain to the north and east, including Pasikuda and Trincomalee. The south and west are at their best.
  • Inter-monsoon periods (around March to April and October): can bring afternoon storms island-wide.

Best time to visit the east coast

For Pasikuda, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, aim for roughly April to September. Seas are calm, skies are mostly clear and it’s ideal for swimming, snorkelling and whale or dolphin watching around Trincomalee.

East coast highlights by destination

Pasikuda

Calm, shallow water and resort stays. Perfect for families and relaxing. Read our Pasikuda Beach guide.

Trincomalee

Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, Pigeon Island snorkelling and seasonal whale watching.

Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka’s surf capital, with its best waves roughly May to September. Laid-back cafés and a backpacker vibe.

Our tip: Australian winter school holidays (June to July) line up perfectly with east-coast beach season. Combine the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and Pasikuda for a brilliant family trip.

Sample route for an east-coast holiday

  • Days 1–3: Sigiriya and Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle. See our Sigiriya guide.
  • Days 4–5: Polonnaruwa’s ancient ruins.
  • Days 6–9: Pasikuda beach time.
  • Days 10–12: Kandy and the hill country, or Trincomalee for more beach.

What about December to March?

That’s peak season on the south and west coasts. Head to Galle, Mirissa and Bentota instead. Our Galle travel guide is a great place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What month is best for Sri Lanka’s east coast?

Generally April to September, when the east coast is dry and seas are calm.

Is it worth visiting Pasikuda in December?

December is usually in the northeast monsoon, so expect rain and rougher seas. The south coast is a better beach choice then.

Can I visit both coasts in one trip?

Yes, especially in the shoulder months, but you’ll need to accept some rain on one side. Plan your beach time around the season.
