Pasikuda Beach: A Guide to Sri Lanka’s Calmest Beach for Australians

We waded out into Pasikuda Bay expecting the water to get deep. It didn’t. A hundred metres from shore it was still barely waist-high, warm as a bath and so clear we could see our toes. After weeks of chasing temples and trains, it was exactly the reset we needed.

Pasikuda Beach, on Sri Lanka’s east coast, is one of the calmest, shallowest and most swimmable beaches in the country. Here’s our guide for Australian travellers: when to go, what to expect and how to make the most of it. For the bigger picture, see our Pasikuda travel guide.

Why Pasikuda Beach is special

A natural reef shelters the bay, so the water stays calm and shallow for a long way out. It’s a world away from the surf beaches of the south coast, and perfect for families with young kids, weak swimmers or anyone who just wants to float.

Best time to visit Pasikuda

The east coast has a different weather pattern from Galle and the south. Pasikuda is generally at its best from around April to September, when the southwest monsoon is drenching the other side of the island. From roughly November to January, the northeast monsoon brings rain and rougher seas. If you’re visiting Sri Lanka in our winter school holidays, Pasikuda is a great beach choice.

Things to do on Pasikuda Beach

  • Swim and float: the main event. The water is calm, shallow and warm.
  • Snorkelling: head towards the reef edge with a local guide for fish and coral.
  • Sunrise walks: the beach faces east, so mornings are spectacular.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding: available at many resorts.
  • Glass-bottom boat trips for non-swimmers.

Our tip: the sun is fierce and the water is so shallow you’ll be in it for hours. Reapply sunscreen often and wear a rash shirt. Slip, slop, slap still applies!

Kalkudah Beach next door

Just around the headland, Kalkudah Beach is longer, wilder and almost empty. It’s great for long walks and sunrise photos, though swimming conditions can be rougher than Pasikuda.
