Most people zip into Yala for one safari and zip straight out again. That’s a shame, because the corner of Sri Lanka around the park is full of surprises: ancient stupas, sacred pilgrimage towns, empty beaches and lakes alive with birds. We spent an extra day exploring and it became one of the most interesting days of our trip.
Here are the best things to do near Yala National Park between safaris. For safari tips, see our Yala safari guide.

1. Visit the sacred city of Kataragama
About 30 to 40 minutes from Tissa, Kataragama is a pilgrimage site sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Indigenous Vedda people. Go for the evening puja, when the main shrine fills with offerings, music and devotees. Dress modestly and remove shoes.
2. Explore Tissamaharama’s ancient stupas
Tissa was once the capital of the ancient Ruhuna kingdom. The huge white Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara stupa and nearby ruins hint at more than 2,000 years of history.
3. Watch the sunset over Tissa Wewa
This ancient reservoir is ringed by trees full of egrets, cormorants and painted storks. A late-afternoon walk or bike ride along the bund is the perfect way to unwind after a dusty safari.
4. Climb Kirinda Temple rock
In the fishing village of Kirinda, a temple sits atop a giant boulder overlooking the ocean. The views along the wild coast are spectacular, especially at sunset.
5. Go birdwatching at Bundala National Park
A short drive from Tissa, Bundala’s lagoons and wetlands are a haven for flamingos (seasonally), storks, pelicans and waders. It’s quieter than Yala and great for keen birders.
6. Spot elephants at Udawalawe
If you have a spare day, Udawalawe National Park, around 2 hours away, is known for large elephant herds. The Elephant Transit Home there cares for orphaned calves and has viewing times.
7. Relax on the south coast
Yala is an easy drive from Tangalle, Mirissa and other south-coast beaches. Combine a safari with a few days by the sea, then head to Galle.
Our tip: book a morning safari and spend your afternoons exploring Tissa and Kataragama. You’ll avoid the hottest part of the day in the jeep and see a different side of the region.
Sample 2-day plan near Yala
